Fearlessness
When people learn about my professional background they sometimes
say things like this:
"I wish I could be fearless like you..."
Now there are a myriad of directions that the conversation could go
next,
all starting with an explanation of how I'm not actually fearless,
I just act
that way. (And please, no comments about how crazy people
don't feel
fear, I've heard them all). In my case it's not being afraid
of the kinds of
things that many people are conditioned to be fearful
of; things like scary
people, physical pain or things that go bump in
the night.
But there is a secret to living fearlessly and here it is:
Fearlessness doesn't start by you feeling fearless, it starts by you simply
acting fearless.
Because, over time, that "act" becomes real. Real, because how you act
is who you really are.
We are our behavior, the things that we actually do.
This is a case
where acting becomes reality even if we're still actually scared.
Now here's the second part of the secret; how to act fearless:
Be you. No facades. Be there for others, to the point that you're
completely vulnerable. Risk much. Care greatly.
That's real fearlessness.
Living this way takes guts. Maybe even more guts than fighting off
bad-
guys, jumping out of airplanes or slamming your fist through a stack
of bricks.
